Another concept Dr Flude touched on is Abstraction.

Abstraction is the reduction of multiple visual factors to only the essential and most typical features of what is being represented, according to Dr Flude. Abstraction to symbolism requires ultimate simplicity, the reduction of visual detail to the irreducible minimum.

This reminds me of many minimalist artworks that are very popular in today's world. Here is one kickstarter that took it to the extremes.

The Thin Gold Line - Cinematic Poster Collection by Plus Minus

Are you able to tell what this is supposed to be?
"The Thin Gold Line: Cinematic Collection is a series of four beautiful ultra minimalist posters printed in Italy aiming to explore a new artistic concept through movie's archetypes.
Each poster of this Collection reveals the traces iconic movies left on the collective unconscious by illustrating their essential form though respecting aesthetic and philosophical criteria. Our golden line is the synthesis of the most minimal and artistic shape with the highest possible recognizability, making it the symbol that best conveys the core of a movie."
The Collection:

Are you able to tell now? ;)

As we have learnt in Semiotics, symbols are learnt culturally. Hence, people who are not familiar with the movies featured may not recognise the symbol.

It takes a lot of talent, effort and experimentation to be able to create a minimalist piece that is still highly recognisable, even more so when just a single line is being used to convey the meaning of the symbol.
